Magic Happens When You Pay It Forward

Image

So the coolest thing happened, that I hope will inspire you to ‘pay it forward’…

When I went to our local gas station to fill up one evening, I walked up to the counter to pay and I said to the tall, young man there…

“You are my hero.”  He looked surprised and asked me why.

I said, “Because every time I come in here, I see how you go out of your way to be friendly and cheerful to customers, no matter how tired you must be, or what kind of day you are having. You are a rare human being.”

He replied, “Well thank you. I try.”

I asked him, “What kind of chocolate bar do you like?”

He said, “I like them all, but especially 3 Musketeers.”

So I grabbed one, paid for it and gave it to him.

He said, “Thank you, but you don’t have to buy me a chocolate bar.”

I replied, “It’s the least I can do.”

He said, “Well thank you. I will share it with the others who work here.”

I said, “I am not surprised that you would.”

Then, he noticed that my Jeep said “Tickleberry Telegrams” on the door.

He said, “You do singing telegrams? Cool! My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up and I would love to give her something special. Do you have a business card?”

“Sure do.” I replied.

Anyhow, to make a long story short… when we make a point of doing something nice for someone, you just never know what will come of it. And, because of his awesome attitude, I gave him an awesome deal on his telegram. So what goes around comes around.

Original Wedding Songs

Well, it’s been a very productive few weeks for me.  Although I primarily write and perform singing telegrams, I am also asked to compose wedding songs for couples.  As fun as the singing telegrams are to do, I especially enjoy the process and the challenge of writing a unique song for such an important and special day as a wedding.  It can take up to three months for the whole process – from gathering information about the couple, to writing the poem, putting the poem to music, getting it approved and making whatever adjustments that need to made, to designing the CD label and cover, creating a framed keepsake of the song, then going to the recording studio to have the song recorded.  Then, finally, shipping the CD’s off to wherever in the world they are going.

The customer I am working with right now happens to live in Australia and it has been such a pleasure working with her.  I am happy to say that she is thrilled with her song.  After reading the words, she asked if there was any way for her to hear the tune in advance.  I managed to find a way to do a rough recording for her from home and send it to her by email and, again, she was thrilled.  It is very rewarding to do something so personal for someone and then to have them be so appreciative and happy about what I’ve done.   I have the best job.

Everything is written and designed.  Now I am just practising the song so I will be ready for the recording session on Wednesday, plus, I need to print off her CD labels and such.   We are on the home stretch and everything will be ready for my customer well before her wedding date.  Yay!

A Telegram From the Military

I received an email from a fella in the military in Alberta.  He could not be with his girlfriend on her birthday in Victoria so he wanted me to surprise her with a special song written just for her.   This is what I love about my job… I have the honour of ‘connecting’ loved ones when life’s circumstances will not allow them to be together.  How great is that?

When I arrived at her door, she was so shocked, she squealed and almost completely shut the door in my face.  Pretty funny!  So I honked my clown horn and told her she couldn’t run away!!  Haha!   Turned out she loved the song, (I could tell) I made her day and my so my job was complete.  Everyone wins!

Tickleberry Creates That Moment They’ll NEVER Forget!

You may have noticed a peculiar sight in town and perhaps, you may even have had her knocking at your door.   She is a hillbilly and what a spectacle to behold!  She wears a hilarious straw hat complete with built-in bugs, enormous rubber feet, a toothless grin, and, for the piece de resistance; a dead rubber chicken hanging from her scraggly dungarees.   There’s more; she also dons a pink guitar with a big heart in the centre, on which she strums a little melody that brings grins and chuckles to her listeners.  And the song she sings?  A cleverly-crafted, unique and personalized song she has composed especially for the recipient who is still recovering from the shock of her arrival.  And where will this singing telegram hillbilly go?  Wherever you want her to show up, whether it be someone’s workplace, their home, a party, an anniversary celebration, a wedding reception, the hospital, a corporate event, a bar mitzvah ..you name it!  And her name?  It’s ‘Tickleberry’ at your service, but underneath the hillbilly suit is Micki Findlay; singer/songwriter, pianist and guitar player.

Micki has a serious side to her as well; she will toss aside the hillbilly suit to compose and perform one-of-a-kind wedding songs.  “I love working with engaged couples, getting to know them as individuals and as couples, collecting valuable information on how they met, what attracted them to one another and so on, and then compiling their information into an original song that creates a personal, musical expression of their relationship and their love.”  This service Micki offers is also perfect for the renewing of vows and anniversaries.

Micki has received numerous awards in the past – primarily in the Cowichan and Greater Victoria Music Festivals and then at the B.C. Finals in Vancouver where she placed 1st for all of B.C. two years consecutively. At age 15, she was chosen to join the Victoria Conservatory Choir and tour the British Isles where they competed with choirs from around the world.  Since then, she has directed and performed in several musicals and comedies with the Cowichan Musical Society, The Mackenzie Players and C.A.T. Productions.   She also sang with The Calico Gang; a singing group in Chemainus that performed for children several years ago.

Here is what one of her customers has to say about Micki; “I talked to my sister Barb and she said your singing telegram was just wonderful.  She said you did such a good job and that she will always remember your visit.  Thanks so much for your effort and working with me on this.  It meant a lot.”  Mike Jacquemain, Shelby Twp., Michigan, USA.  Micki receives requests from all over the world for recipients who live on Vancouver Island and, when the recipient lives elsewhere, Tickleberry will create one of her famous ‘over-the-phone’ telegrams.

If you would like Tickleberry to “Create that moment they’ll NEVER forget”, you may contact her through her website and she will send you a questionnaire to gather information about the person you want her to sing to and create a unique song perfect for the occasion at hand.  She prefers at least 3 days notice for singing telegrams and at least 3 month’s notice for original wedding songs.
